Santa Rosa Asphalt Co. is a modern hot asphalt plant located in Milton, FL. They have been a Lubrication Engineers, Inc. customer since 1993. Pictured above is the control room of Santa Rosa Asphalt where every function of the plant is controlled from aggregate mix to drying, as well as heat, drum speed, conveyor speed, silo temperature and load out. Santa Rosa Asphalt has been at this location since 1966.

Even though Santa Rosa Asphalt is a modern asphalt plant, all of their equipment must endure conditions that are typical to all asphalt plants such as dirt, dust, high loads, rain, summertime heat and the cold of winters. The demands on equipment and lubricants are extreme and make LE lubricants the lubricants of choice. In fact, Mr. Pat Turner, Plant Manager will not permit the use of any lubricant product other than Lubrication Engineers, Inc. In fact, Mr. Pat Turner, Plant Manager will not permit the use of any lubricant product other than Lubrication Engineers, Inc.

LE's 607 ALMASOL Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant is used in the REX and FALK gearboxes throughout the plant. Before in-stalling LE's 607, gearbox failure and replacement was considered normal after 2 to 3 years, and the seals required regular replace-ment.

Since using LE's 607 AL-MASOL Vari-Purpose Gear Lu-bricant there has been no gearbox failures and no seals have been replaced. Also, gearbox amperage reductions have ranged from 6 to 8%!

The saddle chain, which drives the rotating drum, is lubri-cated by 9000 PYROSHIELD Syn-Gear Lubricant. Normal chain life expectancy before re-placement is about 300,000 tons. The cost to replace the saddle chain is $25,000 in parts and labor. The saddle chain has been in service over 600,000 tons and shows no apparent wear.

The trunnion bearings support the tremendous weight of the drum which is heated to 900°F. The trunnion bearings are lubricated with LE's 3752 ALMAGARD Vari-Purpose Lubri-cant to handle the high loads and not squeeze out of the bearings yet still form a collar around the seals to keep dirt and moisture out.

The Astec dryer removes moisture from the aggregate and heats the aggregate so it will readily adhere to the asphalt. The conveyor bearings that feed the dryer were previously lubricated with a specialty lubricant. The bearings failed regularly and required replacement 3 to 4 times every year at a cost of $1,000 for each replacement. There has been no bearing failures or replacements since using LE's 3752 ALMAGARD Vari-Purpose Lubricant. This has generated a saving in bearings alone of $3,000 to $4,000 per year.

Because of environmental considerations, asphalt plants must contain and collect dust. This is accomplished in a "bag house" where rapidly moving air captures and collects dust on large Nomex bags. Subsequently, this dust is removed from these bags by controlled pulses of air, and is collected in a hopper which feeds the dust back into the asphalt mix. With the previous specialty grease the exhaust fan bearings for the bag house failed and required replacement twice each year at a cost of $600 each. Since switching to LE's 3752 ALMAGARD Vari-Purpose Lubricant, there have been no bearing failures or replacement in this application. This saved an additional $1,200 in bearing cost annually.

All head and toe conveyor bearings are lubricated with LE's 3752 ALMAGARD Vari-Purpose Lubricant to insure smooth and trouble-free operation in a demanding environment.

Santa Rosa Asphalt also uses 2400 DCI PLUS Diesel Fuel Supplement in it's bulk diesel fuel tank. According to Plant Manager, Pat Turner, the most noticeable benefit from 2400 is when "our equipment will start in the winter cold and the equipment at the cement plant across the street won't." Santa Rosa Asphalt Co. has not replaced any injectors since adding 2400 DCI PLUS to their diesel fuel storage tank.

Santa Rosa Asphalt Co. uses:

607 ALMASOL® Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant

3752 ALMAGARD® Vari-Purpose Lubricant

2400 DCI PLUS® Diesel Fuel Supplement

9000 PYROSHIELD® Syn-Gear Lubricant

We wish to thank Pat Turner, Plant Man-ager and LE Representative Rosemary Sanders for the information to prepare this report.
