8800 MONOLEC ULTRA® Engine Oil
Mobile Crushing Operations
SIC 5211 Sand and Gravel
00-05-17 (LI70367)

Peak Sand and Gravel travels to remote locations in Western Montana, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho to provide sand, gravel and crushed rock for various construction needs. They have been an LE customer since 1994.

The prime power source for one crushing unit is a 3512 Cat genset, which is used to provide power to the equipment in the remote locations.

This monster diesel was requiring an oil change every 300-350 hours and was consuming 30 gallons of makeup oil between changes. Owner Larry Peak was concerned about extending his drain intervals because the equipment operates in a very dusty environment.

Mr. Peak became familiar with the superior performance of LE lubricants from the operator of his Interstate Asphalt plant. The asphalt plant personnel were impressed with several LE lubricants being used on various applications. When it came time to specify an oil on the cone crushers on Peak Sand and Gravel’s mobile equipment and the 3512 Cat genset, LE Rep John Kowsky was called in. He recommended 8800 MONOLEC ULTRA® Engine Oil for the 3512 Cat genset.

LEAP oil analysis was used to determine the suitability for continued service after the change to LE lubricants. After using 8800, oil and fuel consumption decreased dramatically. Previously, a 1,300 gallon diesel drop was being made every other day to fuel all the equipment. Peak Sand and Gravel is now getting an additional day between drops which amounts to huge savings in fuel. Oil analysis eventually reached 1,500 hours, at which point the equipment was shut down for the winter and a determination was made to change out the oil. This again amounts to huge savings for Peak Sand and Gravel because there is far less oil consumed, fewer maintenance hours necessary for change-out of the 65 gallon sump and a great reduction in the amount of waste oil being created and requiring proper disposal. Additionally, the oil consumption of the unit has been dramatically reduced to one gallon in a 20-hour workday!

These results convinced Mr. Peak to "put LE in everything," in order to benefit from LE’s performance and wear reduction in all the equipment’s engines, hydraulics, transmissions and finals. 604 ALMASOL® Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricant is used for the crushers calling for a 4 EP, ISO 150-gear oil and 300 MONOLEC® Industrial Lubricant is used in the cone crusher that requires ISO 68-gear oil. Oil analysis is being used to monitor these cone crusher oils, and they continue to test good for continued use far beyond the previously used commercial grade oil. 4700 MONOLEC® Industrial Lubricant is used on the $10,000 bearing on the jaw crusher in which an NLGI 00 grease is pumped down to the bearing where it must flow to supply a constant protection and lubrication to the bearing. 7500 MONOLEC® Power Fluid and 7550 Power Transmission Fluid are also utilized in Peak Sand and Gravel’s equipment. 3752 is used on all the loader pins, as well as all bearings calling for a #2 grease.

We wish to thank Larry Peak and his crew, and LE Representative John Kowsky (pictured) for the information provided to prepare this report.
